Travel five islands at your own pace, alternating activities and rest, depending on your mood and curiosity. With your vouchers and plane tickets in hand, you leave for Santiago (with a strong identity), Fogo (and its malicious crater), São Vicente (and its splendid Bay of Mindelo), Santo Antão (intergalactic capital of hiking) and Sal (intergalactic capital of idleness).

SANTIAGO - African roots
Santiago is the main island of the endearing archipelago and more african than the other islands. It was here, that the history of Cape Verde began in the 15th century. In the former capital Cidade Velha, today a UNESCO world heritage site, we can visit the testimonials of the first settlers. Until today the pillory and other historic sites remind us of the sad history of the place, which was once a key element in the atlantic slave trade.
In today´s capital Praia we should visit the historic Plateau with its colonial buildings and colorful and vivid markets. Later we pass by the african market Sucupira, which is also full of colors, scents and experiences.
Or maybe we feel like doing an island drive. Santiagos´ mountains of vulcanic origin, Assomada with its huge street market on wednesdays and saturdays and the small village Tarrafal in the north with its beautiful white beach are going to impress us.
Santiago provides travellers, who like to wander around or even hike, with many interesting tours through almost untouched nature.
We spend the next three nights in Praia, in the historic center of the Plateau.

FOGO - The ardent volcanic island
We fly to Fogo. Fogo literally means fire and the highest mountain of the whole country, the "pico do fogo" lived up to his name during the last eruption in 2014.
The crater area, called Cha das Caldeiras, creates a spectacular scenery with its solidified lava streams around the majestic vulcan. It forms the centre of the island, like a black candle with wax running down alongside until reaching the green agricultural regions, which complete the picture together with the blue of the endless ocean around it.
The island's capital Sao Filipe is without doubts one of the most beautiful villages in the country and leaves a lasting impression on us with its colonial flair, numerous appealing spaces and its location near the sea with the panoramic view at the neighbour island Brava.

SÃO VICENTE - The port and cultural city of Mindelo
On the way to the north islands! After a short stop in Santiago, we arrive in São Vicente. The island is famous for its capital, Mindelo, port city and the second largest city in the country. With its colonial houses, its port, its lively markets, Mindelo today offers innumerable reminiscences of its glorious history when it was a must for boats crossing the Atlantic but also a great showcase of contemporary culture and capeverdean music. The nightlife of Mindelo is known for shows in bars and restaurants.
The beach of the city "Laginha", protected from the big waves of the ocean, invites us to bathe. It's the beach of sportsmen, draggers, bodybuilded frivers, children; it is also the place where all the gossip of the city flows in good humor. Ideal place to have an aperitif in front of a sunset pink, yellow or orange according to the time of the year.
The interior of the island is rather dry and almost empty. On Monte Verde, the highest mountain of the island, there are cultures made possible by the mist of the clouds. In good weather, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the neighboring islands of Santo Antão and Santa Luzia, or even São Nicolau and the islets Raso and Branco when the sky is really clear.
The beach "Praia Grande" offers a mixture of sands, the white of the Sahara and the black of the lava of the surrounding volcanoes, with waves sometimes downright furious - a place to remember!

SANTO ANTÃO - The green and mountainous paradise
After a short boat trip, we set off to discover Santo Anto, an island whose reputation is growing around the world and especially among nature lovers and unforgettable landscapes. Steep cliffs, green and tropical valleys and impressive volcanic craters attract hikers from all over the world.
The second highest island in the archipelago, Santo Antão offers many paths along the ridges, paths whose meanders lead through the clouds to delightful little villages elegantly clinging to the sides of the mountains and up to the many sugar cane plantations where national rum, the grogue, is produced.
The Paul Valley is the greenest and most popular in the archipelago. A tropical green surrounded by an incredible mountain curtain. Small villages, a simplicity of life and extraordinary people: this is Paúl!! We spend three nights in Ponta do Sol in the north-east of the island, a charming fishing village with a lively and inspiring port.

SAL - Seaside island
Back to São Vicente and flight to Sal. And then...
FARNIENTE! No appointments, lazy at the beach. Or dancing to bouncing rythms in one of the dicos at night? Sal is one of the three Beach-islands. Relaxing in the sun, walking at the beach, taking a swim - enjoy some days of real vacation and let the past few days sink in.
In Santa Maria we find the most beautiful beach of the island, along many shops, restaurants and bars. The tourism industry is well developed and all of those who still feel the urge to go an adventures will find numerous offers like beach activities, daytours, boat trips and many more.
We can recommend a trip to the old saline. Sal literally means salt and the island once had a flourishing salt production. A highlight is the zero-gravity hovering in the brine. Not yet the dead sea - but still fascinating.
