Day 1 - Monday SÃO VICENTE - The cultural harbour town of Mindelo

First day in Mindelo, the proud cultural capital, with its music, the Carnival, the sailors' taverns - and let's not forget about the view upon the bay, considered as one of the 30 most beautiful bays in the world (no less!).

Cesária Évora once sang: "who does not know Mindelo, does not know Cape Verde"; the barefoot
diva brought attention to the town where she was born, and from which she departed. In the afternoon we stroll through Mindelo, the city with the small streets, lively markets and the relaxing main square. Our guide tells us his story; many anecdotes and the visit at a guitar builders' atelier will lead to falling in love with this town.

Finally we are reaching the "Rua de Lisboa", the heart of the city. Mindelo is full of life - definitely not shy or moderate. Only on Sundays she is resting a little bit.

Day 2 - Tuesday SÃO VICENTE - Off-road discovery of the island

A full day off-road safari in São Vicente. This excursion brings us through stunning nature along the northern and the southern coast of the island. We will cross the only agricultural valley the island has to offer until a spot where it is possible to see the neighbouring uninhabited islands Santa Luzia, Razo and Branco. A small visit in a fishing village to admire the wooden boats they use for their work before heading to the Monte Verde.

This day will give us a different view over São Vicente which not many have seen.

Day 3 - Wednesday SÃO VICENTE - SANTO ANTÃO
Hike Altomira - Curral das Vacas // approx 3, 5 hours // 6 km // +520m -520m // Level 3

In the morning we are heading to the green neighbouring island of Santo Antão by ferry and will take our way towards the west of the island. It is a very remote region that allows numerous encounters and discoveries. Step by step, valley by valley, our feeling for time and reality will adapt to the local rythm. The hospitality inthe family-run pension we spend the night in, will make us feel just at home.

Day 4 - Thursday SANTO ANTÃO - The wild, wild West
Hike Bordeira de Norte // approx 5 hours // 10 km // +700m -700m // level 3

Today's hike is the hardest and at the same time the most spectacular one. We are climbing up to the high plateau of 'Norte'. A part of the island where the surviving of the inhabitants very diffcult. Amazed by this 'completely different world' we are walking down to Ribeira das Patas with breathtaking views over the valley. For those of us who do not want to join the whole hike, we do have the possibility of joining the group on our own towards the end to save some power for the upcoming days.

Day 5 - Friday SANTO ANTÃO - Heading North
Hike in 3 parts // approx 2, 5 hours // level 2

Enjoying! That is the plan for today. After yesterday's hike we are relaxing the soul today: the old trading route that crosses the island from south to north offers forests and spectaculär views. Along this road we are doing some teeny-weeny hikes here and there to see the most beautiful spots. In the afternoon we are reaching our accomodation which once was the only the house of a family and transformed itself over the years into an authentic pension - where we still have dinner with the family sometimes.

Day 6 - Saturday SANTO ANTÃO - Beauty at the end of the world
Hike approx 4 hours // 8, 9 km // +860m -1100m // level 2-3

Today, we cross two valleys as green as wonderful. We cannot forget to learn some words of Cape Verdean creole, in order to exchange more than smiles with the local farmers we encounter. Once we've reached the village let's just sit and watch the kids play table soccer or the people running errands at the local merceria (grocery store), we'll check into our family-run pension for tonight and enjoy a delicious homemade dinner. Simple, human, typically Cape Verdean.

Day 7 - Sunday SANTO ANTÃO - Along the coast
Hike approx 5 hours // 14 km // +1000m -1000m // level 2-3

Let us not miss a second of this wonderful day - we give an early start to one of the most spectacular hikes of Cape Verde: the one along the coast. We are accompanied to the right by the base of steep, if not vertical cliffs, while we are bordered to the left by the endlessness of the Atlantic Ocean. Small paths used by shepherds lead us through exceptional landscapes, each curve revealing new surprises. Overnight in Ponta do Sol, the charming fishing village and the northernmost spot of the achipelago.

Day 8 - Monday SANTO ANTÃO - Green, greener, the greenest
Hike approx 3 hours // 6 km // +400m -400m // level 2-3

Today, we have a much closer encounter with the greenest and most tropical valley amongst the whole archipelago, the beautiful valley of Paúl. A good catchupa (the national dish) served in a little restaurant in the middle of sugar cane fields will surely delight us. Later in the afternoon, why not visit one of the numerous grogue distilleries of the valley? Overnight in the small village of 'Vila das Pombas', which, surrounded by sugar cane and mango trees, builds the 'entrance door' to this small paradise.

Day 9 - Tuesday SANTO ANTÃO - free day

While our guide heads back home, we are free to choose how we want to spend our day in Paúl, the valley of thousand hikes. Before he leaves, let us not forget to ask our guide for some ideas!

Today could be just like any other day, we would open our eyes asking ourselves where we are before remembering that we are on the most beautiful island in the world, we would take our breakfast, would pack our things before taking a transportation to another little charming village with a view over the ocean and looking into the 1000 smiling faces of the inhabitants.
But today will have more emotions than ever and incredible sensations: it is canyoning day with stunning rappel in the waterfalls. The landscape, water everywhere, tropical plants, the parfume of sugar cane, rocks: the decoration is perfect and it is exactly here that we will challenge our heart, it is exactly here that we will create memories for the next ten years. Day 10 - Wednesday SANTO ANTÃO - SÃO VICENTE

Finally relaxing. We return to Mindelo - during the crossing, let's keep our eyes open and if we are lucky we may see dolphins or maybe flying fish. In São Vicente we can go out and maybe buy our last minute souvenirs, take a dip at Laginha, do an island tour, have a drink , or even have dinner while enjoying some tradicional music. There are endless possibilities to end our trip. Overnight in the historical centre of the town.

Day 11 - Thursday Going back to EUROPE

This is the moment we did not want to think of for the last days - and now it is there - riiight there. It is time to pack our bags. It is painful but we try and ease the pain by slipping a bottle of grogue and/or a bottle of tamarind or peanut pontche into our bag - something to 'mata sodad' (kill the nostalgia for Cape Verde) while waiting to come back. See you soon!
Or, in order to push this moment as far away as we can, we can relax our soul for some more days at the infinite beaches of the island of Sal.
